Lautner, Miley Cyrus Win Kids' Choice Awards

Team Jacob was triumphant at the Kids' Choice Awards.

"Twilight" star Taylor Lautner picked up two orange, blimp-shaped trophies at Saturday's 23rd annual shenanigan-packed Nickelodeon spectacle inside UCLA's Pauley Pavilion. Lautner snared the favorite actor honor for his "New Moon" role as hunky werewolf Jacob Black as well as the inaugural cutest couple award with his "Twilight" co-star Kristin Stewart.

"I have to admit I have always dreamt of winning one of these orange blimps," said Lautner.

The fan-favorite ceremony's host, "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" actor-comedian Kevin James, kicked off the show by performing a hip-hop dance routine as Adam Sandler serenaded him from above while dressed as an angel and fountains of green slime spontaneously gushed on the first few rows of the audience. James said more than 115 million votes were received this year.

Katy Perry, wearing a bright blue wig and skintight flowery dress, was blasted with slime when presenting the favorite movie actress trophy to Miley Cyrus. The gooey "I Kissed a Girl" singer chased the "Hannah Montana" actress around the stage, but co-presenter Jonah Hill grabbed Perry before she could embrace the 17-year-old singer-actress with a slimy hug.

"I can't see anything," complained Perry. "Why does it taste like boogers?"

Other favorites included "Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" for movie, "Up" for animated movie, Jim Carrey for voice from an animated movie for "A Christmas Carol," ''Mario Kart" for video game, "iCarly" for TV show, "American Idol" for reality show, "SpongeBob SquarePants" for cartoon, Dylan Sprouse for TV actor and Selena Gomez for TV actress.

"I'm the luckiest girl in the whole world," said Gomez.

In the music categories, the winners were Black Eyed Peas for music group, Jay-Z for male singer and Taylor Swift for female singer and song for "You Belong With Me." Favorites in the sports categories were two-time Olympic gold medalist volleyball player Misty May Treanor for female athlete and 20-year-old skateboarder Ryan Sheckler for male athlete.

"This goes right in the trophy case," Sheckler said holding up his blimp.

First lady Michelle Obama won the ceremony's "Big Help" award for her "Let's Move" campaign to cut down on childhood obesity. The honor is part of Nick's own "Millions on the Move" campaign. Over the next few months, the network will feature public service announcements to encourage kids to stay active and promote activities that help the environment.

Nickelodeon is owned by Viacom Inc.

Dyrdek's Street League Looks to Shake Things Up

Today Rob Dyrdek, the pro skater, entrepreneur and TV star gave a name and an official press release to his long rumored efforts to create a brand new contest series. With Street League, Dyrdek has corralled some of the world's most elite skaters and gotten them to commit to exclusive agreements to compete in only the Street League contest events with a few caveats. After speaking with a representative from Entertainment Fusion, the public relations group that is handling Street League, I learned that the skaters who've signed on with Dyrdek's new venture will be allowed two wild card contests (non-Street League contests) that they may enter this year After this year inaugural year, the skaters who've signed on will compete exclusively in Street League contests for the next three years.

Will Mountain Dew sponsored, Paul Rodriguez still compete in Dew Tour events

now that he's a part of Street League?

Will Sheckler still compete in X Games?

What does that mean for skateboarding? Good question. It seems that this year, the skaters in Street League, including Chris Cole, Paul Rodriguez, Ryan Sheckler and more, will be able to compete in one of the Maloof Money Cup events and the X Games if they so choose or in some combination of those contests and A Dew Tour stop. However, after this year, if the series takes off, they'll only be competing in Street League events and what was described to me as a handful of contests that do not conflict with their exclusive contracts (Tampa Pro was the only contest name given from that handful cited because "It's not broadcast on television.").

Dyrdek's contests are sure to stir some controversy. It appears that many skaters will be forced to choose between some of the already established contests and Dyrdek's latest brainchild. How will this unfold with skater's sponsors and obligations? How will this effect fans all over the country? We'll bring you more information as it becomes available.

Red Bull team gets first class treatment for opening of new Arena

March 23, 2010, 2:04 PM

By: Ryan Leyba

Red Bull

Ronnie Renner and Heath Frisby living the life at the NYC Red Bulls game at the new Red Bull Arena.

This past weekend Red Bull flew the majority of their athletes out (all sports) for the opening of their new arena, aptly dubbed the Red Bull Arena. The arena is located in Harrison, New Jersey, which is about 12 miles outside of Manhattan, and is the home to Red Bull's MLS soccer team, the Red Bulls.

Attending the grand opening of the stadium were Red Bull moto riders James Stewart, Ronnie Renner, Lance Coury and Heath Frisby. In true Red Bull fashion, the boys received first class treatment and were given a true New York experience.

"The entire team was put up in the W Hotel. Red Bull hooked us up with awesome helicopter rides over Manhattan, V.I.P. tickets to a Knicks game at Madison Square Garden, V.I.P. access to the best New York nightlife with some of the best athletes in the world, and of course the reason for our trip, the grand opening of the Red Bull Arena. It was 4 days I will never forget." exclaimed Coury.

Unfortunately I was unable to make it to the event, but I was able to nab some pretty dope photos from Red Bull. Also, since Red Bull owns this stadium, does this mean we'll be seeing a Red Bull X-Fighters in New York City? Holy crap, I sure hope so! Just look at how perfect the stadium would be for such a thing! Or maybe Red Bull will even rent the stadium to ESPN for the X Games! How sick would that be?

Red Bull

James Stewart makes an appearance.

Red Bull

The entire Red Bull team is no joke. Peep Lance Coury and Ryan Sheckler budding up in the middle. How about "The Lance and Sheckler Show?" Any takers?

Red Bull

Come on now, how sick would it be if Red Bull held an X-Fighters in this baby? SICKKKKK!!!! I bet Red Bull flows out of the drinking fountains by the gallon.

ACTION SPORT ATTRACTION: Local BMX star to race at home

TJ Lavin has waited 14 years to compete in a major event in his hometown so another seven months will not be too much to bear.

The 33-year-old BMX Dirt bike legend is eager for the prestigious Dew Tour to hold its season-finale Oct. 14-17 at the Hard Rock.

"There have been some races here but nothing like the Dew Tour," Lavin said. "This is amazing."

Lavin, a Las Vegas native who has a BMX track behind his Southern Highlands home, competed in one of three Tour events last year but plans to race all four this year. Two events, including the June 25-26 opener in Boston, are limited to skateboarding.

His racing schedule was limited last year due to commitments to MTV, where he hosts "Real World/Road Rules Challenge." He arrived in Mexico City on Friday afternoon to host part of MTV's spring-break coverage in Acapulco.

"I love the X Games, but the Dew Tour is our premier series and it's bigger than the X Games."

This year's Tour offers a total prize fund of $2.5 million.

Another Las Vegas resident expected to compete is Australian Cam White, the 2008 BMX Dirt champion.

While Lavin and White will enjoy staying at home, others are eager to spend four days in Las Vegas as the Tour's annual banquet also will be held here.

"I love Vegas, so to be able to compete there seems almost surreal," said Ryan Sheckler, a three-time Dew Cup champion."

The Hard Rock event will include all six Tour disciplines: skateboarding (park and vert), BMX (park, vert and dirt) and freestyle motocross.

Each Tour event is televised live on NBC. Various segments also are shown on cable outlets. including MTV and USA, and in selected foreign countries.

The Dew Tour is the latest sports series to hold its season finale here, joining college basketball conferences, AMA Supercross, Professional Bull Riders and the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.

"Las Vegas has a long and storied history of supporting high-profile, season-ending championships," said Pat Christenson, president of Las Vegas Events. "This will be our first foray into championship action sports and a great addition to our roster of signature events."

Skating Sell-Outs

Skateboarding is not a sport. According to some of the biggest names in skateboarding, like Mark Appleyard and Frank Gerwer, skateboarding is not even an "extreme sport." Skateboarding is an art, a subculture and a world of its own. It possesses many of the same traits as any sport or pastime but the tie that holds skateboarders together is a tight one. Well, at least it used to be.

In August 2007, MTV single-handedly broke down the skate world's barriers by airing the reality TV show, "Life of Ryan," a show that displayed Ryan Sheckler's oh-so-awful life and times growing up in Orange County - with more money than my family, grandparents and uncle put together - while he skateboards and travels the world for a living.

Boohoo.

As if the label of reality TV isn't misleading enough, the life of Ryan as depicted on the show is clearly far from reality.

I'm not going to say I like Ryan Sheckler because that would be a lie. I will admit that he is a talented skateboarder, and deserves what he has (at least when it comes to sponsors). But do I respect the guy? No way.

Ryan's oh-so-exciting life somehow gained the attention of hundreds of thousands of viewers throughout each season of his show's short career, leaving fans with one thought in their mind: "Skateboarding? Yeah, I could do that." Well, the joke's on you.

Meanwhile, the skateboarding world is blowing up online, in magazines, on blogs and elsewhere.

Sheckler and MTV were the talk of the town.
The real world adores skateboarders like Sheckler. He's been in everything from deodorant commercials to milk commercials. (Yep, he's one of the few to wear the milk mustache, skateboard in hand.)

But who cares?

Skateboarding isn't about being in milk commercials, or winning the X Games.

Skateboarding isn't about having your own TV show or about being famous.

Rather it is about the self-satisfaction of riding the board. It's about skating your surroundings - anything and everything.
I think it's sad that corporations such as MTV weasel their way into these kids' wallets.

What is even more depressing, though, is when your favorite pros change companies they have been on for years just to boost up that paycheck.

They gain money but lose respect.
From a fan's perspective, it's just how you look at it.

Skateboarding is branching into two major directions right now: you're either in it for the fame, money and sponsors who aren't even associated with skateboarding; or you're doing it for the thrill, passion and the feeling of bombing a hill at 6 a.m. to grab a cup of coffee.

I hate to admit it, but Sheckler does love skateboarding. He is a professional, and deserves his title. I just don't agree with advertisements in skateboarding magazines showing a kid posing for the camera like a model, without a skateboard in sight.
Skateboarders used to make money by skateboarding - strictly and solely. They would take photos (yes, of them skateboarding), which would be published in skate magazines, and they would get paid for ads.

Most professional skateboarders in the 1990s and even into the 2000s lived in crammed apartments, with six or seven friends, skating to survive. They didn't drive around in Mercedes or BMWs, let alone shoot skateboarding ads flaunting them. A skateboarder's life was as raw and as exciting as you could imagine.

Unfortunately, this was before industry-heads realized they could make a few bucks to be corny and ride for sellout companies. Many of them jumped on that wagon without thinking twice, although a fair share of professionals and skateboarders of all ages remained humble, and underground.
MTV called Tim O' Connor, a pro for Habitat skateboards, more than three times to set up meetings and get a show started. He denied them every time.

That is exactly how it should be.

Tampa Pro qualifying round

Tampa Pro Qualifier
Check out footage from the Tampa Pro contest's qualifying round with Paul Rodriguez, Chaz Ortiz, Torey Pudwill and more in this exclusive video by RB Umali.

To almost nobody present's surprise, Torey Pudwill blew past all of his competition Saturday and qualified in first place just ahead of Luan Oliveira. Pudwill's first run was flawless and included tricks like a backside lipslide up and across the hubba ledge that everyone else was busy going down. The day seemed to belong to Pudwill even before he took his runs. Many of his new Plan B teammates including Colin Mckay, Ryan Sheckler and Pat Duffy sported T-shirts with a giant picture of Pudwill's face on them to informally announce his arrival onto the elite squad.

Torey Pudwill was by far one of the most fun people to watch all day. This Smith was part of a flawless run.

Although he qualified second, Oliveira had the crowd's rapt attention as well. Tampa being the first pro contest for the rookie, it sure didn't seem that way. Oliveira has nearly a home court advantage since he won Tampa am on the same course just a few months ago and won it the year before as well. Oliveira pulled some crowd pleaser tech moves including frontside 360 heelflips down the Tampa street course seven-stair. The top five were rounded out by Sierra Fellers, Paul Rodriguez and Nyjah Huston. Huston, the young dread newly at the helm of his own board company I&I, had a flawless run though perhaps not as technical as some of his peers who placed higher.

Rookie pro Justin Brock tossed these steezed out 360 flips over the pyramid every try. And yes, this is a make.

Torey Pudwill and Luan both receive "Golden Ticket" buys straight into tomorrow's finals. Fellers, Rodriguez, Huston and Sauder will join the 25 other qualifying skaters in the semi-finals as well as previous Tampa Pro winners who get an automatic buy into the semi-finals [that list includes Gershon Mosley, Kyle Berard, Dennis Busenitz and Eric Koston]. Semi-finals begin Sunday at noon and with the amazing caliber of skating seen so far, things should get very interesting.

The skaters that qualified for the semi-finals are as follows:
1. Torey Pudwill 2. Luan Oliveira
3. Sierra Fellers 4. Paul Rodriguez
5. Nyjah Huston 6. Keegan Sauder
7. John Rattray 8. Chaz Ortiz
9. Tyler Hendley 10. Fabrizio Santos
11. Peter Ramondetta 12. Matt Miller
13. Rodil Jr. 14. Robert Lopez Mont
15. Chad Bartie 16. Ryan Sheckler
17. Billy Rohan 18. Andrew Pott
19. Danny Fuenzalida 20. Stefan Janoski
21. Chad Fernadez 22. Milton Martinez
23. Anthony Shetler 24. Shuriken Shannon
25. Danny Cerezini 26. Sammy Baptista
27. Mike Peterson 28. Chris Troy
29. Neverton Casella 30. Justin Brock

Paul Rodriguez pulled this switchstance backside tailslide in both of his nearly flawless runs.

Ryan Sheckler rolls into Dallas to judge D-Town Throwdown

Skateboarders participate in the 2nd annual D-Town Throwdown.

LAURA COOK/The Daily Campus

On the stairs in front of the American Airlines Center, skateboarders perform heelflips, ollies, backside bigspins and other tricks, transforming the entrance to the arena into a hip skateboard park.

While skateboarding is usually forbidden in places such as AT&T Plaza, Tuesday Night is a different story as Lil Wayne’s song “Bedrock” emanates from the DJ booth, setting the tone of the two-hour event.

A crowd of about 300 watches as the contestants use the six stairs and stair rail to perform outrageous stunts that even those unfamiliar with the skateboard lingo cannot help but cheer for. With over an hour to impress the judges, the skateboarders try to land the perfect stunt in hopes of being named the best skateboarder in North Dallas.

On Tuesday night, Action Park Alliance held the 2nd annual D-Town Throwdown in search for the most talented skateboarder in North Texas. The contest was held before the Dallas Stars vs. Los Angeles Kings game at American Airlines Center, with trials from 6-7 p.m. and finals beginning at 7:15. Red Bull sponsored the event, handing out free drinks and supplying a pimped out party bus for VIP spectators.

Blending in with the electronic and hip-hop jams being spun by the DJ were the “ooo’s,” “ah’s” and “oh’s” from spectators as the competitors either landed a cool trick or took a serious dive onto the concrete ground. The most anticipated part of the event was the guest appearance of pro-skater, Ryan Sheckler. Sheckler is sponsored by Red Bull and flew to Dallas to help out with the event. The two-time gold medalist of the X Games judged the skaters, looking for who could do the most moves in the allotted time as well as who was not afraid to try difficult stunts.

“At the end of the day it’s all about the hardest trick you can pull out,” Sheckler said.
Most of the contestants were in their early 20s and had competed in last year’s event. Shawn Greene, a 22-year-old from Dallas, took home first place in 2009’s D-Town Throwdown, and placed 4th this year.

“My favorite move is a backside 360˚, that’s how I usually try to impress the judges,” Greene said.

The backside 360˚ was a popular move Tuesday night, as skaters waited patiently for their turn to run and jump onto the stair rail and ignite cheers and applause from the fired up crowd.

Sheckler says the laid back nature of the event and constant skateboarding keeps spectators pumped up.

“A contest like this is easy to watch because it’s a lot of action, it’s a lot of fun, so I’m always into it,” Sheckler said.

The eight skaters held nothing back during the finals, as skateboards slid down the rail, spun in the air and flawlessly landed back on the ground.

After 30 minutes of battling it out, David Sauceda took home the title this year with his last move of the night, the “ghetto bird,” known in the skateboarding world as a hardflip backside 180˚.

At the end of the event, fans and constestants alike lined up to get autographs and pictures with the guest of honor, Sheckler.

Sheckler, who gained popularity with his 2002 MTV reality show, Life of Ryan, was in town for only a day to judge the event. Since then, Sheckler has been concentrating on his new clothing line, RS, available at JC Penny.

Though he is undecided of whether he will compete in this year’s X Games or Blue Cup, Sheckler does know for him it is all about the skateboarding.

“I just want to skate. I have this whole season to straight up just skateboard,” Sheckler said.
