The Red Bull Flugtag Is Coming To Long Beach And I’m A Judge!

Red Bull puts on some of the coolest events around. I was lucky enough to take part in the Soap Box race in Downtown LA last year and had a blast. Now it’s time to fly. This Saturday, the Red Bull Flugtag will be coming to the Rainbow Harbor in Long Beach and I’ll be a judge!!

Join me and my fellow judges Skateboarder Ryan Sheckler, legendary Actor Cheech Marin, Comedian Nicole Sullivan and Tenley Molzahn from The Bachelor, as we watch teams try to fly their homemade flying machines into the Rainbow Harbor.

X Games: Sheckler still has street smarts

It was not the pain that was excruciating. It was the watching.

Ryan Sheckler sat on his couch in San Clemente for seven months and was forced to watch his friends compete on the Dew Tour and in the Maloof Money Cup. He occasionally would swim in the family pool to stay in shape.

But get on a skateboard? Fat chance. He admitted it hurt too much.

"It was a lot longer than I thought," he said of recovering from a broken right foot. "It was crazy. It was weird to sit on the couch wondering what these guys were doing and working on. I didn't think I would be able to keep up."

The 20-year-old, who burst on the action sports scene by dominating the X Games course in 2003 en route to a gold medal at the tender age of 13, reclaimed the top honor in X Games 16's street skateboard competition on Saturday atop the parking garage next to the Nokia Theatre.

Sheckler broke his right foot in two places during the third heat at last year's X Games. He knew immediately during the competition it was broken. Surgeons had to put screws in his foot to fix them. He had won gold in 2008 and silver in '07. He sat on that couch for seven months and said he did not begin feeling like his old self until the Dew Tour's Boston event just a few weeks ago.

"It just feels goods to be back on the board," he said.. "Not so much to win, although it is great to win. But the fact that being hurt and then going through all the steps to skating 100 percent again. And then skating with all these homies and making it to finals. I'm psyched."

Sheckler said he barely could ride while it was broken. He said the screws hurt too much,

"I would skate around the street, but I barely did anything," he said. It was hard, man. But it's good. We're here."

It was a crazy contest. The day started with 10 competitors in a pair of 18-minute heats. The top two and the highest-scoring third advanced to the finals for a 15-minute, five-rider heat.

Sheckler got the lead on the first round with a score of 90.66. He held until the third round when 15-year-old Nyjah Huston of Huntington Beach scored a 91.73 by taking successful rail slides to the forefront.

Sheckler then topped it with his take on the rail. He did a cab backflip fakie en route to a 92.66.

"When (Huston) threw down his banging run, yeah, the numbers were flying," Sheckler said. "It was just a crazy contest. It was hard to talk about topping it. I was just trying to do a different run from what I had done, to see if I could get a better score. I threw out a trick and changed it up, and that did it, so that was cool."

Sheckler then watched the scoreboard to look for the score. He raised his board after seeing it.

"Everyone was skating so well and I was nervous the whole time," Sheckler said. "The tricks being thrown down were sick. I loved it.

"It was totally in the judge's hands. I knew that's all I had and I knew it was the last run. I just wanted to try my hardest and it worked."

It was the second consecutive silver for Huston, who said he was not unhappy to finish second again.

"I was not thinking I could win," he said. "I was just happy I landed the run I wanted to do. I'm more used to jam sessions where you can bring out the best tricks you can do. I am actually surprised by the runs I landed, so I'm really happy."

The run that briefly put Huston in the lead included nollie backflips down the rails. But it was the quarterpipe, a huge broken teacup, that he said created his problems.

"The transitions were hard enough to figure out in your run and what to do with them," Huston said. "Street courses have nothing in those type of transitions."

In his winning run, Sheckler did a switch 180 transfer and then landed on the flat with a kickflip.

Ryan Decenzo of Vancouver, British Columbia, finished third with a 90.00 run, his first in the finals.

"It was fluky because I pretty much landed what I wanted to do," he said. "Then it was, `How can I better my own stuff?' I needed three minutes more of practice to figure it out. I didn't know what to do.

"Those guys were killing it."

Chaz Ortiz of Chicago, 15, had the best elimination score by nailing 360s over the double set of stairs, which included eight steps, but he seemingly could not keep it going in the finals and had an 89.66.

Sierra Fellers of Whitefish, Mont., finished fifth.

Event to Feature Live Performance by Neon Trees and Paper Tongues on Friday

Burr Ridge, Ill. - August 9, 2010 - The Dew Tour returns to Portland, Ore. for the sixth consecutive year for the Wendy’s Invitational, August 12-15 at the Rose Quarter. Neon Trees and Paper Tongues will co-headline the MTV2 Rock N Jock Concert Series at the Rose Quarter on Friday, August 13 from 9:00-11:00pm. Grounds Pass tickets are now available for just $15.

The Wendy’s Invitational will kick-off this Friday with BMX Dirt Finals followed by a concert with Neon Trees and Paper Tongues. Saturday will feature Skate Park Finals and BMX Vert Finals. The weekend will conclude on Sunday with Shaun White and the Skate Vert Finals, BMX Park Finals and freestyle motocross will complete the day with a step-up and best whip competition.

The star-studded field of athletes competing in this weekend’s Dew Tour Wendy’s Invitational includes reigning Dew Cup champions, Olympic gold medalists and X Games 16 gold medalists. Among them are:

In skate vert, Shaun White will battle it out with Pierre-Luc Gagnon, along with vert veterans Bucky Lasek, Bob Burnquist, Sandro Dias and Andy Macdonald. Ryan Sheckler will look to secure a win in skateboard park against the likes of Greg Lutzka, Paul Rodriguez and Chaz Ortiz.

Garrett Reynolds hopes to take home the Dew Cup again in 2010 and will compete against comeback-kid Mike Spinner, veteran Dave Mirra and fellow X Games 16 gold medalist (BMX park) Daniel Dhers. Out on the dirt course, 2009 BMX Dirt Dew Cup Champion Ryan Nyquist is set to face Dennis Enarson, TJ Ellis, and 15-year-old rising star, Brett Banasiewicz. Banasiewicz has been dominating the BMX scene in both park and dirt since his debut in 2009. Jamie Bestwick is ready for a six-peat in BMX Vert, holding onto the longest winning streak in Dew Tour history.

Making for another memorable year, the 2010 Teen Choice Awards took place in Universal City, California on Sunday (August 8).

It's been a good week for Ryan Sheckler. Last Saturday, July 31, in front of a capacity crowd and more than a million TV viewers, the 20-year-old skateboarder took gold at X-Games 16. Last year, things were different. In the third round, Sheckler landed badly off a 12-stair drop and his ankle more or less exploded. It was the worst injury of his career and immobilized him for six months. What happened? After the jump, the sport's wunderkind multimillionaire discusses his injury, his comeback, his winning run, and how it all ended in gold.

How did it feel coming back to the contest where you got hurt? Were you nervous?
No. I love to compete, and just wanted to go out and do my best, then hopefully come home with a win. And it worked out.

You pulled some really hard tricks on your final run. Tony Hawk, who announced the contest, said you combined the best parts your previous two.
Yeah. It all came together during the final. Everyone was skating so well, so I had to switch it up a little bit. I did that alley-oop—which I hadn't tried—into that whole tea cup area, then that full-cab back lip [a 270-degree spin into a backward slide] on the handrail. Those were both spur of the moment decisions.

The tea cup area looked like it was built by the Mad Hatter on crack and acid.
You had to really pay attention when you were airing from one to another, because there were sections missing, and they're all at different angles. Personally I haven't skated anything like that, but it's a little like a bowled corner at a skate park. They were a lot of fun.

Hawk also said it was going to come down to whether the judges counted the half-cab back lip. [They did.] That was the riskiest, most impressive part of your run.
I don't what I was thinking. After landing the backside flip up the step-up, I knew I had to do something good, so I just went for it and tried to stay on. I touched the ground, but there was enough momentum to keep going, and then enough time for one more trick [A frontside blunt on the LSD teacup wall].

Let's talk about your injury. What happened?
I tore the first metatarsal, the ligament between the big toe bone and the rest of the foot, so they had to put screws in and let everything heal.

You've had bad injuries, but never been out this long. What was that like?
It was horrible. I was off my board for six full months and going to physical therapy every day. Cold laser treatments, wobble board, that kind of thing. Injuries are part of skateboarding, but this was really hard. Though, you know, it was also a time to reflect on a lot of things. I also redesigned my skate park, which was cool.

In a recent interview, skate legend Rodney Mullen explained how an injury completely changed his approach. Has this injury changed skating for you?
I think it has. Now I try to just let it flow, and not worry so much about style. And everything's a little more aggressive now because I'm more confident being back on my board, so I really try to stomp my tricks with each landing. My skating now is a little bit harder and a little bit smoother.

The sport seems divided on the issue of contests, the idea of judging something so individual and artistic. What's your stance?
Personally, I like contests. I've always been a competitor, which plays out in my skateboarding, but there's also something very rewarding about perfecting a 60-second run. If you work on a run for a whole week, then bring it to the final, and you just nail it, there's nothing that beats that feeling. It's an adrenaline level you can't match skating on the street by yourself.

Who do you admire in the sport?
All the guys on my team. Paul Rodriguez [son of the actor Paul Rodriguez] is my favorite skateboarder. Felipe Gustavo is amazing. Scott Decenzo. And Torrey Pudwill, the new Plan B pro. He's absolutely bananas.

San Clemente’s skating hero Ryan Sheckler left it all on the line Saturday, July 31, as he put together a string of seamless runs to mark his third X Games gold medal during the Skateboard Street Men's Finals at L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles. Sheckler battled back and forth throughout the jam session with Nyjah Huston, but came out on top after a near-perfect final run.

"It was a crazy contest to be back. I got hurt last year and wanted to get back this year, and this definitely exceeded my expectations," Sheckler said. "I'm psyched. I just had to believe in myself. I just needed to get my bearings about me, let it flow and not worry so much about it. I couldn't have done anything more."

Sheckler, who made the best use of the teacup during the jam session, put together a final run that included a full cab back lip to fakie down the rail, alleyoop frontside transfer from one half of the teacup to the other, gap up to 5, frontside air on the teacup and a cab back lip to take the win.

"I wanted to throw out a different run from what I already did. The course is interesting. You had to get out there and just start throwing down. I liked it," Sheckler said. "I just threw it out and gave it all I had because I knew it would be my last run."

The year marked the second silver medal in a row for Nyjah Huston, who said this silver meant more to him because of what he put into it.

"It means more this year because last year there was just one more trick I needed to land. This year I actually landed the run I wanted to do, so I was really happy with the way I skated," Huston said. "I wasn't expecting to win, I was just trying to do my best and I am happy with how it turned out."

Ryan Decenzo rounded out the top three as he took the X Games bronze.

Sheckler took the lead in his first of five runs, in what was essentially a warm up -- albeit a warm up that included a kickflip backside boardslide on the rail, backside kickflip down the gap, a hugeswitch kickflip that he barely landed and a backside tailslide down the ledge that earned him a 90.33.

With skaters given 45seconds or two crashes per run, Sheckler appeared to have a solid holdon things until the third run, when Huston popped off a run that included a 360 flip up the gap, a switch heel to manual down the ledge,and a backside 270 boardslide. The run earned him a 91.33.

While both Chaz Ortiz and Ryan Decenzo threw a variety of bangers in their runs, both were plagued by untimely crashes that kept them from fully challenging Sheckler or Huston.

At his next opportunity, Sheckler seized the moment, stringing together a kickflip to boardslide, a big frontside air in the tea cup, a backside flip up the gap, a cab 360 lipslide down the rail into a frontside blunt in the little tea cup transition. The run garnered a 92.00 -- cementing the podium despite Huston and Ortiz each having one last shot at Sheckler's lead.

Sheckler acknowledged that he wanted redemption after last year's XGames, when he sustained an ankle injury that derailed most of the last year. "I chose X Games because I got hurt here last year and wanted to prove to myself I could come back and get a gold," he said, taking time to also acknowledge the rabid fan base that was evident in the crowd.

"They'reyelling the whole time," he continued. "You don't want to let them down, so you skate your heart out and do the best you can do."

After a lackluster performance at X Games 15, Daniel Dhers of Caracas, Venezuela, returned to the top spot at X Games 16 with a gold medal in BMX Park. Saturday's win marks Dhers' third gold in BMX Park (he won gold in both '07 and '08.) Dhers' runs consisted of multiple flair variations, a tire-grab 720 and stylish lookbacks over the park visor. Dhers also seemed less affected by the heat and fatigue of riding than the other competitors in the final.

"I'm really, really stoked," Dhers said immediately after the finals. "After not making it into the finals last year, I had a lot of doubts about riding, wondering if that was the end of my run. But I went back and did my homework. BMX isn't going to get any easier, so I decided to work harder, adapting to the courses and whatever gets thrown at me. It's a self-rewarding thing."

Finishing in second was Haro's Dennis Enarson, followed by fellow San Diego resident Gary Young in third. Enarson initially placed 11th in qualifying and did not make it into the finals. But after Haro teammate Rob Darden dropped out of the 10th-place qualifying position Friday, Enarson was bumped into the finals. His runs consisted of unique (and burly) tailwhip transfers, lipslides over the park visor and trademark Enarson tabletops. Young, who qualified first and was the favorite to win, crashed during practice and injured his knee. "It's a little sore, but I should be OK," Young said after the finals while getting medical attention from the X Games staff.

Last year, Kevin Robinson won the Big Air doing a run that won him gold in 2007: a huge no-handed backflip over the 70-footer to no-handed flair at height on the 27-foot quarter. On Saturday night, Chad Kagy took a similar route, landing a backflip tailwhip over the 70-footer to flair whip on the quarter -- the same run that won him X Games gold in 2008. Australian Steve McCann took second, followed closely by fellow Australian and X Games Big Air rookie Andy Buckworth.

The unexpected story of the night was the Big Air embrace of the double frontflip. Last year, Anthony Napolitan debuted the trick, and Saturday night McCann and Buckworth also landed the double. Napolitan finished in fourth place, followed by Morgan Wade in fifth and Robinson in sixth. In non-flip-related news, Wade rolled the dice as always with a dream run that never came to fruition: a no-handed backflip over the 70-footer to triple tailwhip at height on the quarter. During Wade's highest triple whip attempt, he reached 18 feet, 3 inches, on the quarter, but either slipped his pedals or crashed upon landing during each of his runs. "I came so close, but it just didn't want to happen," Wade said, bruised and battered with two black eyes and more than 20 stitches in his forehead from the park event earlier this week.

"It was nice to be able to land that first run. It's a real motivation boost to put it under your belt and build on top of that -- just waiting to see what everyone else was doing," Kagy said afterward. "The way we run this, one run counts, so at any given moment any of those guys could have won."

Sunday features the final BMX event of the X Games: the Street final. Between his ability to combine multiple bar spins and grind combinations, Garrett Reynolds is our prediction for the win. We'd like to predict that Sean Burns will make a triumphant return despite finishing last in the elimination, but considering he's currently at the Scorpions concert at L.A. Live, we're guessing he'll oversleep.

With his first gold in Big Air Rail Jam, Bob Burnquist proved once again that he's really in a realm of competition with only himself. Adam Taylor stuck a 50-50 and boardslide fakie. Elliot Sloan secured the bronze with a frontside Smith grind, and Rob Lorifice took the silver with a backside lipslide. But Burnquist stuck two tricks that were head and shoulders above the rest: a switchstance frontside boardslide and, the clincher, a 50-50 body varial where Burnquist grinded the rail and switched his stance midgrind.

Although women's street defending champion Marisa Dal Santo has yet to make an appearance in practices, if she comes to Sunday's final, it's really still her contest to lose. Although the level of women's street has steadily progressed in the past few years, Dal Santo seems to be ahead of the pack in both consistency and her willingness to take her tricks bigger than the rest. Veteran pro for women's skateboarding and four time X Games gold winner Elissa Steamer is quick to point to Dal Santo as the future of the sport. "I'm not nervous about any of them, but I know that Marisa's really good," Steamer said.

Other women to watch out to potentially upset the balance of power include Lacey Baker and Alexis Sablone, who have the skills to pay the bills.

Sunday's Park final may well signal a changing of the guard, thanks to a course that's more wide-open, with smaller features like you'd find at your neighborhood skatepark. Many of the dominant riders of years past -- Rune Glifberg, Omar Hassan, Bucky Lasek and Andy MacDonald -- come from vert and pool-skating backgrounds that served them well when the Park course was based on a vertical paradigm with deep corners and pockets.

Many of the walls on this year's course don't exceed 6 feet and only a few of the transitions reach vertical, which favors the younger generation that was raised in the recent skatepark boom and is accustomed to finding speed and stringing together trick-filled lines in an open layout. That might be why, of the top five qualifiers from Elimination, three are teenagers: Pedro Barros, Kevin Kowalski and Curren Caples. Meanwhile, two-time and defending champ Glifberg barely made the cut at 10th.

RALLY RACING

Chaos is the best word to describe the Rally Car events at XG 16, and both were dominated by Tanner Foust and Brian Deegan. The anticipated battle between the two in the Rally final turned into a bust when Deegan made a wrong turn early in the run and was disqualified. The entire event was marred with red flags, as the drivers struggled to get through the races without either destroying their cars or going off course. Drivers reported that the most challenging parts of the course were the drops back into the stadium, because with the sun setting and plumes of dust filling the air, they couldn't see where they were going. Favorites Travis Pastrana, Ken Block and Kenny Brack all suffered car damage and couldn't finish.

Chris Tedesco/ESPN Action SportsFoust isn't as high profile as Travis Pastrana or Ken Block, but today he was better than both.

"I didn't know how hard it was going to be to memorize the track," Foust said. "I think the best thing for me was qualifying first because I got to pick the lane I wanted. I memorized one lane."

The debut of SuperRally was tough as well. Travis Pastrana's and Sverre Isachsen's cars needed new engines and Dave Mirra's required a new rear differential. Race organizers ran the heat races out of order in an effort to give Pastrana's crew more time to fix his car, but the effort was for naught. As the heats got under way, the big names continued to struggle with car trouble. Brack, Block and Isachsen all dropped out early. Deegan got the jump off the line ahead of Foust and Stephan Verdier in the final, but Foust had the inside and forced his position to make the pass into second.

There was some on-the-air confusion after this point because the lap count on television didn't match the live race, but according to X Games public relations director Katie Moses Swope, "It was a technical error. The first driver took the first turn on the first lap wide and missed the timing line, so it didn't trigger the graphics to start and didn't register the first lap -- so the graphics [on the broadcast] were always a lap behind. The checkered flag was spot-on."

MOTO X FREESTYLE

Sunday marks the return of Speed and Style to the X Games schedule, and Brian Deegan -- who comes into the event fresh off two silver-medal finishes in Rally Car Racing and SuperRally -- has to be considered a favorite to finally get his X16 gold. No other rider is as prepared as Deegan, who had an exact replica of the X Games course built on his Metal Mulisha compound in Temecula, Calif. With a background in both racing and FMX, Deegan possesses all the skills necessary for the win.

But as I learned during Freestyle Moto X on Thursday, you'd be a fool to bet against Travis Pastrana. He'll be the most decorated racer on the track, with a 2002 AMA 125 national title and a 2001 AMA 125 East Coast SuperCross championship. Oh ... he also has 10 X Games gold medals. Bet against him at your peril.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — It was a delightful little tea party for Ryan Sheckler in his return to the X Games medal stand.

The skateboarder and MTV reality star made the most of the “teacup” feature of the games’ street course in a nearly flawless final run Saturday to win his third gold medal in Skateboard Street.

Sheckler’s tricks included an alley-oop frontside transfer from one half of the teacup to the other, a frontside air on the teacup and a cab back lip.

Sporting bright bling in his ears, Sheckler went trick-for-trick in the final jam session with Nyjah Huston, who won his second straight silver with a performance that would have meant gold in most years.

Sheckler, of San Clemente, Calif., scored a 92.66. Huston, of Huntington Beach, had a 91.33. Canadian Ryan Decenzo took the bronze with an even 90.

The skateboarder and MTV reality star made the most of the “teacup” feature of the games’ street course in a nearly flawless final run Saturday to win Skateboard Street at X Games 16.

Sheckler’s tricks included an alley-oop frontside transfer from one half of the teacup to the other, a frontside air on the teacup and a cab back lip. Sporting bright bling in his ears, Sheckler went trick-for-trick in the final jam session with Nyjah Huston, who won his second straight silver with a performance that would have meant gold in most years.

“It was a crazy contest to be back,” said Sheckler, who missed the 2009 street final after rolling his ankle and won his first gold at age 13. “I got hurt last year and wanted to get back this year, and this definitely exceeded my expectations.” Sheckler, of San Clemente, Calif., scored a 92.66. Huston, of Huntington Beach, had a 91.33. Canadian Ryan Decenzo took the bronze with an even 90.

Sheckler Qualifies First In Street

The elimination round of Skateboard Street at X Games 16 was held today at the Staples Center. Ryan Sheckler qualified first making teenage girls everywhere jump for joy.

There was some controversy too. Brian Anderson and Bastein Salabanzi finished tied for tenth, being the core legends that both are no one wanted to see either eliminated. After a few discussions it was decided they would add up all of their run scores, instead of counting the best one run, with which they were deadlocked at 77.0. In the end Salabanzi's total was higher moving him into the Final.

Men's Street Elimination saw some unusual faces that might be more interesting to watch than the favorites to win. With defending champ Paul Rodriguez, 2007 champ Chris Cole, and three-time medalist Greg Lutzka all out due to Street League commitments, skaters with much lighter competition resumes have filled the void. Skaters like Creature's David Gravette, Zoo York's Eli Reed, Omar Salazar, Ryan Decenzo, and Garrett Hill impressed the crowd along with favorites like Ryan Sheckler, Nyjah Huston, Rodolfo Ramos, and Chaz Ortiz.

The most interesting features on the course are the bowled transitions faced off like two sides of a broken tea cup. It was easy to see which skaters were more comfortable on rails and ledges and which had more well-rounded game. Gravette is definitely the latter: he stuck a backside 360 alley oop from the high tea cup transition into the lower portion.

"I really like the tea cup and feel I'm pretty weak in other areas," said Gravette, who's rookie X Games performance is also his first pro contest. "I thought I was going to get dead last, but I'm stoked that I made the finals. It's my first contest in a really long time."

With Rodriguez, Cole, and Lutzka out of the way, the Final could be dominated by Sheckler, so long as he stays on his board. His first roll through the course was perfect, with a backside tailslide on the precarious rail set atop the hub ledge. Ortiz and Decenzo are both technical and consistent enough to give Sheckler some competition, but Sheckler's familiarity with the transition section gives him an edge. He was raised on both street and serious transitions and was clearly right at home in the tea cup.

Jake Brown repeated as Skateboard Big Air champion, beating prohibitive favorite Bob Burnquist. Brown threw a backflip over the 70-foot gap before spinning a huge backside mute-grab 540 on the quarterpipe on his second of four runs to earn a 93.66.

That score edged Burnquist, who tossed a switch backside 180 into a backside 540 in his second run to earn a 93, into second place. Last year, the 36-year-old Brazilian released a segment in the Flip Skateboards movie "Extremely Sorry" that featured a slew of never-before-seen mega ramp tricks that had many feeling Thursday's event was his for the taking. Early buzz was that Brown would have to land the first-ever 900 on the mega ramp quarterpipe to take Burnquist down, so it's ironic that it was Burnquist left trying the 900 in an effort to catch Brown. He came tantalizingly close on his third and fourth runs -- so close, in fact, that even after Brown had been announced the winner, Burnquist unsuccessfully attempted several more 900s in an effort land one unofficially.

Park Elimination was a mix of creative line-finding and an outright bloodbath. Gary Young repeated his number one qualifying performance from last year with a grind over the visor and one of the longest downside double peg grinds around a corner ever seen -- It's the first time a rider has qualified first on the merit of grinds. The rest of the top five was 15-year-old Brett Banasiewicz, Diogo Canina, Jeremy Smith, and Daniel Dhers.

The visor, a unique plexiglass extension that runs over the course and looks like something a beach volleyball player would wear, only really big and standing on its end, was Young's favorite section of the course and was assaulted by all 20 riders.

Many of the pros came into the comp looking like they'd already been assaulted: Ryan Guettler (separated shoulder), Drew Bazanson (separated shoulder), Mark Webb (broken foot), and Morgan Wade (two-day-old concussion, 10 stitches above his eye) all rode injured and none held back. But Wade destroyed his front wheel on a transfer gone wrong and broke open his stitches, while Bezanson repeatedly put himself at risk with unsuccessful attempts at an icepick on the roof above the rider staging area.

During Street practice, X15 bronze medalist Van Homan bailed while attempting to air from one side of the tea cup to the other. Homan landed on his feet but then fell backward and hit his head on the concrete. On-site medics forced him to sit down for over an hour while they monitored his condition. They eventually cleared him to leave the contest and head back to the hotel.

"I'm okay, just a little dazed" said Homan while leaving the venue. Street eliminations commence at 12:30 p.m. on Friday and Homan intends to ride the event.

Friday also sees Vert Finals, and whether or not Jamie Bestwick can make it a four-peat in Vert will be the topic of the day. If his performance at last week's Dew Tour is any indication, it might not even be a contest. Chad Kagy rode flawlessly in Chicago and still finished three points behind Bestwick. We're saying a four-peat is more than likely.

MOTO X FREESTYLE

Never bet against Travis Pastrana. Though he hasn't competed in Freestyle since 2006, Pastrana stunned his competition by completely dominating both the Elimination and the Final. His big tricks were relatively stock -- nac nac and indian air backflips -- but his use of the course was more creative than his competitors, as he threw backflips off random features and used every inch of the wallride. It was enough of an edge to beat out 18-year-old New Zealander Levi Sherwood, who had much bigger tricks but was more timid on the more unusual course features.

Chris Tedesco/ESPN Action SportsTravis Pastrana won a record seventh gold Moto X Freestyle medal at X16 on Thursday night.

"Honestly, I thought Levi had way better tricks -- Pastrana was just a little more exciting to watch," said Jeremy 'Twitch' Stenberg. "But I think Levi's going to be untouchable next year -- that kid's freakin' badass."

Repeating his same performance as last year, Nate Adams garnered another bronze medal after putting in a flawless run, which included some of the biggest 360s we've seen from him in a really long time. However, his staple tricks just weren't enough to top Sherwood's smooth style and radical extension.

Friday is the Best Trick Final, which is the most anticipated event at X16 for hardcore FMX fans. Cam Sinclair will throw either a one-handed or no-handed double backflip, which could possibly be topped by Kyle Loza and his new variation on the Electric Doom that he used last year to win his third consecutive gold in the event. Then there's Paris Rosen with the frontflip and Aussie newcomer Clint Moore, who's keeping his bag of tricks on the DL.

My guess? Gold Friday night is won by an unexpected rider throwing a completely unexpected trick.

MOTO X RACING

Three days ago from the comfort of his couch, Josh Grant decided that he'd like to come try to win Men's Super X. By now he's back on his couch polishing a gold medal. Grant, the second fastest qualifier was second place in the final at the end of lap one. Defending champion, Josh Hansen enjoyed a four second lead for the majority of the race but gave it up on lap ten when Grant flew by him in the whoops. Half a lap later, Hansen was off the track and back in fourth place. He pulled himself together to close out the podium. Justin Brayton rode much of the race back in fourth place and took advantage of the mayhem ahead of him to take his second consecutive silver medal.

Grant, who hasn't finished a supercross style event since May 2009, was surprised and relieved by the result: "It's a breath of fresh air for sure but it was last minute and I didn't expect to come out and do that."

As for Hansen, he admitted that he was distracted by his pants, which wouldn't stay up. "Everything was going good but I got a little flustered at the end," he said. "I just started thinking too much about dumb stuff and then blew off the track and went back to fourth. Yeah, it's pretty frustrating. I didn't even know what was going to happen. I was waiting to maybe even cartwheel into the stands at one point."

The Womens' Super X final was a battle of who could make fewer mistakes on a course that was quickly turning into a dust bowl. At the end of lap one Ashley Fiolek and her main rival, Jessica Patterson led the way. Both women were struggling with the timing on the 75-foot triple jumps, often under jumping them.

The battle was hot on lap four but Patterson crashed on the finish line jump when she landed right on top of the 'plastic track boundaries. The crash knocked her out but she walked away.

Fiolek then cruised to her second consecutive gold medal while former gold medalist, Tarah Gieger and Sara Price battled for second and third, respectively all the way to the finish.

With defending champion Chris Ridgway out of competition due to a swollen left patella, Mike Schultz was the clear favorite to win gold. Dave Turner was the surprise leader at the end of lap one but Schultz pulled the gutsiest move of the day when he jumped over top of Turner on the set of 75-foot triples. Schultz was the only adaptive rider jumping the two biggest obstacles on the track.

Despite a big lead, Schultz continued to clear the big jumps, a strategy that almost cost him. On the final lap he landed hard enough to break his prosthetic leg. It locked up at the joint in a 45-degree angle and his foot dangled off the side of the bike. He rode the entire last lap with one leg and his pace was so slowed he beat Todd Thompson by only a bike length.

Grant, Fiolek are X Games gold winners

Their plans were completely opposite.

Josh Grant did not decide until the final 48 hours that he would attend X Games 16. Ashley Fiolek had the date circled on her calendar since winning the gold medal last year.

The pair won the supercross gold medals Thursday on a Coliseum track they called dusty and blind because of the afternoon sun.

"It's a breath of fresh air for sure," said Grant, the Riverside native said. "It was last minute. I didn't expect to come out and do that. I wanted to go out and have fun. I haven't had fun outdoors."

It's been a tough two years for Grant. He won the 2008 AMA supercross opener in Anaheim and then had to sit out more than a year because of two broken feet.

"I figured it was our weekend off from the outdoor stuff," he said.

"I can't really win the title there. (Ryan) Dungy's run away with the points. I figured there was nothing to lose. I'd do some big jumps and hang out."

It appeared as if Josh Hansen would win the race. He had a big lead, but missed a jump.

"I kind of let the pants drop to my knees and I let it get to me," last year's gold medalist said. "I was struggling, overshooting stuff. I got in my own way and I almost cartwheeled into the crowd."

Justin Brayton finished second for the second consecutive year and Hansen was third.

"The whole track was sketchy," Grant said. "It was dusty. You couldn't see. When I was behind these guys, I was just following their rear wheels because that's all I could see. The whole track was pretty much blown out. It wasn't good."

Fiolek, who is deaf, took the lead going through the megaramp tunnel on the first lap. Both Jessica Patterson and Tarah Geiger nearly caught her, but Fiolek had the better lines to pull away.

"Christmas is early this year," she said. "X games is the best thing ever. I was struggling with the whoops, but everything worked out."

Gieger said she hit her helmet on her handlebars on the triple, the same one the men complained about. Patterson, running in second, lost in the sun, went down and out of the race because of that sun.

"The dust and the sun, it was impossible to see," said Gieger, wo finished second.

Sara Price, who had the holeshot, finished third in her first supercross race.

Waiting for the crash-fest

Tanner Foust, who has competed in every rally event at the X Games, trained for the first Super Rally competition, which will feature four cars racing at the same time, by taking part in the sport's European version of the sport, rallycross.

The drivers will practice for four hours this afternoon at the Coliseum and then race on Saturday night.

"They're freakin' insane," Foust said of rallycross drivers. "The European guys who drive them are ticked off all the time. There is so much crashing and sliding. It's probably a lot like supercross in a car. Guys like (Brian) Deegan and (Travis) Pastrana, they are used to shouldering in on somebody, It's going to be just like that except you're in a rollcage. It's a video game mentality."

Andrew Comrie-Picard, who has also started in every X Games, said the start will be the key.

"It's a whole level up from what we've done before," he said. "I like them upping the ante."

The cars have increased their horsepower, from 320 to 600, but because the entire course is on dirt, both Comrie-Picard and Foust said that will have a negligible effect.

"It's how you're going to take out - not take out - is how you're going to win," Comrie-Picard said.

Elimination rounds

Ryan Sheckler and Gary Young had the top scores in elimination rounds on Thursday.

Sheckler, from San Clemente, scored a 95.0 in men's street skateboard. The top 10 advanced to Saturday's competition at L.A. Live. Simi Valley's Paul Rodriguez, who won last year's competition, did not compete.

Young, from San Diego, had the top score in BMX park with an 82.00.

Scotty Cranmer, who won gold last year, took the 10th and final position.

The fine printed 3-5% commission and transaction fee. Because in addition to buying your 13-year-old a shirt that he or she will hate in a week, mom and dad would love to pay 5% extra!

So in the case of Bill My Parents vs. The Wish List, we’ll have to vote in favor of the oldie. Bill My Parents may have a flashy website and Ryan Sheckler as a spokesperson, but if you ask us, the whole thing seems a tad pointless, if not scam-y.

Greg Lutzka Returns to Top at Skate Open

Greg Lutzka won the Skate Open skate park title, becoming the ISF Skateboarding World Champion in the process and returning to the top of the Dew Tour podium for the first time since 2007.

Ryan Sheckler also made his return to the podium, and to the Dew Tour after losing a year due to injury, and he claimed second. Newly minted Zoo York pro Chaz Ortiz rounded out the top three.

A total of 12 skaters were separated into two six-man heats to start the park finals with only the top six advancing to the super final jam. In the final jam, Ortiz had a lead, but was closely followed by Lutzka and Sheckler. The trio of Dew Tour newcomers in the final included Eli Reed and Sierra Fellers along with Bastien Salabanzi, who dominated both rounds of qualifying.

Both the old guard and the new guys battled it out in the final seven-minute jam session making it hard on the judges to pick the top three.

But when the dust settled and the scores were tabulated, Lutzka’s solid, consistent and progressive skating won the day, and he claimed the first park win of the 2010 Dew Tour season.

Kicking off the 2010 season, Neon Trees and Paper Tongues will perform a FREE concert at City Hall Plaza on Thursday, June 24 at 8pm. The five-city tour will continue on to Chicago, Portland, Ore., Salt Lake City, and conclude with the Dew Tour Championships in Las Vegas this October.

Over 120 of the best skateboard athletes from 22 different countries will compete in Boston at the Skate Open in both vert and park. Highlighting the vert roster includes defending Dew Cup Champion and Skate Vert World Champion, Bucky Lasek, Boston-native Andy Macdonald, up-and-comer Alex Perelson, 2008 Dew Cup Champion Pierre-Luc Gagnon and vert legend Bob Burnquist.

For Saturday’s finals, Action Zone tickets cost $100 a day for adults and children and provide access to priority reserved seating for all finals contests on Saturday, in addition to official Dew Tour merchandise, a behind-the-scenes tour, athlete autograph session, merchandise discount coupon, Fast Pass access into all venues and interactive areas and cold Mountain Dew. Reserved seating tickets will be $35 for children and adults and guarantees seating for all finals competitions. Grounds Pass tickets cost $15 for adults and children.

Friday’s event tickets are on sale for $15 for all ages. The ticket will include admission to all preliminary round competitions held at TD Garden.

The 2009 Dew Cup champions include Chris Cole (skateboard park), Bucky Lasek (skate vert), Garrett Reynolds (BMX park), Jamie Bestwick (BMX vert) and Ryan Nyquist (BMX dirt).

WHO’S DOWN 4 B.M.P???

I went down to Ryan Sheckler’s private Training Facility in San Clemente yesterday to take some pics and do a quick interview with the Teen Heart throb.He was shooting a commercial for Bill My Parents a super rad Bill payment/debit card system that allows kids to shop online and purchase products without having to have a Credit card. The heads over at B.M.P have put together a pretty ridiculous roster of Action Sports Superstar’s including Rob Dyrdek, Travis Pastrana and the wonder kid himself Mr. Sheckler. I could go into what the system is all about but you can go here BMP instead. Not only was Ryan part of the shoot but His longtime Friends Tony and Casey, aswell as his brother Shane were all in on the act. Ryan Is wise beyond his years and the Fact he see’s the potential in investing his name into a project like this speaks volumes to The Team over at B.M.P. Chris Zam of “STREET DREAMS” fame was hired on to do the direction of the commercial which was obviously set in the park. I spoke to Chris as well about Street Dreams 2 and working with Skateboarding Royalty.All and all i had a fun day hanging with old friends and trying to shmooze The B.M.P folks into getting me on board as well? Hopefully Im as good a pitch man as Ryan and the next B.M.P blog I do will be for my own Commercial? I’m Down 4 B.M.P!!!

For more than 10 years, skateboarding phenomenon Ryan Sheckler has made a name for himself -- one that stands for different things depending on whom you ask. Due to his successful-yet-sappy MTV show "Life of Ryan," he's a heartthrob to a nation of television-obsessed teenyboppers. At the same time, he alienated many core skate fans. In spite of everything, it can't be denied that Ryan Sheckler kills it on a skateboard. It is the most important factor in the Sheckler equation and he's well aware that all he has is thanks to skateboarding. So Sheckler chose to turn his back on the television show last year and focus on what brought him success in the first place.

I've known Sheckler and his family for over a decade now. He is a good kid from a good family, despite the way MTV's edits often portrayed the Shecklers. As he explains in this interview, the kind of vile filth they've had to deal with as a result of their fame only made it worse. In the end, "Life of Ryan" will be a small blip on the radar of a long career. In the end Ryan Sheckler will be remembered for what he was able to accomplish on his skateboard, not off it.

I love the new Oakley ad with the "I Hate Sheckler" T-shirts. Are you actually selling those?
No, that was just a joke. We were trying to come up with concepts for ads and I was just goofing around and was like, "Let's just make 'I Hate Sheckler' shirts." They liked it. We just went to L.A. and screen-printed a couple. I have a couple at my house; my friends wear them sometimes. It's funny.

Last year if you were selling them you'd probably make a mint off them but maybe they wouldn't sell as good now.
That's a good thing. I would hope that they wouldn't sell as good now. I've been trying to get back to the roots and just keep it skate. There are still definitely those haters out there but I'm not trying to win them all over.

Do you feel that you're getting less flak now?
In a way, yeah. I went to Tampa Pro this year and I totally thought people were just going to be hating the whole time and it was one of the better experiences I've ever had at Tampa. Everyone was psyched to see me skate and I felt cool to be around all those kids. It was good to feel accepted.

Did you skate with a helmet like when you were 10?
No, man. I should have done that. The last time I was there I got the award for Best Slam. A couple years ago I got that concussion and I didn't go back for a while.

Do you think that the easing up of negative feelings toward you has a lot to do with not doing that MTV show anymore?
Yeah, I think it has something to do with that. But the only reason I think it does is because with the show off the air I haven't been in everyone's face as much. So, they don't know what I'm doing and everyone is like, "OK, cool. Maybe he's living the normal life," which I am. I'm skating every day and just trying to get in shape for these contests. I was injured for a while so I'm just trying to 100 percent with that. It's good that [the show] is not on TV anymore.

Was the decision to end the show mutual? MTV's decision? Yours?
Mine; 100 percent mine. When I started the show I said, "If it gets me away from my actual skateboarding fans and gets me away from skateboarding, then I'm not going to do the show anymore." That's why our third season was only six episodes; we cut it in half. I was, like, "I can't do it anymore! It's going to be more detrimental to my career than positive." We just quit. We stopped it.

Is there anything you miss about having the show?
Nope, not a damn thing. I'm glad to be just skating and doing my own thing.

Have the crazed fans settled down?
No. They're still up and kicking for sure.

Did you ever get actual stalkers just showing up at your house?
Not my house but my mom's house. There was a guy that showed up there, a man. It's a crazy story and my mom is in court today for the situation. The dude came to the house during the day and made himself known. My little brother Kane answered the door and he said, "Kane, is Gretchen here?" So Kane thought my mom knew this guy. Long story short, my mom told him to get away from the house because he said he had a present for Kane. They came home later that day and the guy had left a gift in the backyard, behind the gates of the house. Kane being Kane opened it and it was a brand-new scooter. But the dude had made this card that read "I love you, Kane," all this pedophile stuff. My brother Shane got home that night at, like, midnight and was walking through the backyard and the dude came out of the bushes and he called Shane my name. It was a sketchy situation for sure and it ended in my brother having to fight the dude, this 42-year-old man, to protect himself. It was crazy. Now we're trying to get a restraining order on him.

The MTV show is done but you got a cool little thing you're doing on ryansheckler.com with Red Bull.
Yeah, we're just doing these little "Skate Life" episodes. Whatever we do or whenever we go on a trip or anything that seems like it would be interesting for our skate viewers we just film it and try to put together six-minute clips every month just to keep the fans informed of what we're doing. It's called "Red Bull Skate Life" and it's pretty fun.

And it's not about chasing chill girls? It's about skateboarding? Yeah, it's about skateboarding -- going out and skating and experiencing new cities and towns and countries. Just having fun and living the skate life.

How was it filming that Berrics United Nations with the whole Plan B team?
Epic. I have no words to describe how awesome that was. It was so awesome to be with the whole team and watching those dudes shred. Felipe Gustavo is one of the best skateboarders around right now. The dude is insane. It was hard for me to skate because I had just come off that injury. That was right after Tampa and I still wasn't 100 percent so I didn't get as much as I wanted in the whole thing but it turned out so good. The team took care of business. Those guys were talking like, "We just got to do everything no one has done before." I was like, "I'm still running basics right now but I'll skate around and have some fun with you guys." Even [Pat] Duffy. He did a nollie back heel down those stairs. Everyone went for it. It was tight.

You're saying you were doing basics because of the ankle injury you sustained at last summer's X Games. How's recovery been?
Not 100 percent basics. I just couldn't really jump that much. I was just trying to get used to putting pressure on my foot again. It's gradually been getting better. It's 100 percent right now and I've been skating my a-- off. My skatepark just got done three weeks ago and I've been in there every day just skating the manual pads and the ledges. I'm trying to switch up what I skate and keep it unpredictable; keep people guessing.

What's the park like?
Indoor, 10,000 square feet. I took the other skatepark out. I had a big one. It was like a skatepark on crack. I took all the big stuff out. I cut the 12-stair down to a nine and basically took out everything that wasn't necessary and put in a lot of flat ground, ledges, manual pads, 25-foot flatbars. It's pretty fun now. It's a good time and I've been able to learn tricks I didn't think I was gonna be able to learn. Being hurt gave me so much time to actually think about skateboarding and think about nollies and skating switch so that when I got back on the board that's all my brain was telling me to do and it was easy to learn. I just skated switch the whole time and I feel more comfortable on my board than I ever have. It's going to be a fun year.

When are we going to see this Plan B video?
That's the question I get a lot. I'm working my a-- off. I know everyone is working to get it done by the end of this year.

Do you know if Danny Way is going to have street footage?
Yeah, he will. His part is crazy.

What are some outstanding goals you still have in skateboarding?
Thrasher magazine's Skater of the Year is clearly my No. 1 goal. The only way I get that is skating. Other than that, I haven't set that many outrageous goals. If I got Skater of the Year that would just really add to it all and make me feel really good. Whether it's this year, next year or five years from now that is my goal.

When it's all said and done, what do you think your legacy will be in skateboarding?
Maybe just opening eyes to the fact that you can actually get paid from skateboarding and you can live a great life and show that anything is possible through skateboarding. I never thought at 18 I'd buy my first house or any of this would be possible but through skateboarding it all was. Hopefully kids realize you can do anything you want. Skateboarding can be that gateway.

You didn't have any idea life would be like this back when you were 10, going down to Tampa Am with your mom, all padded up?
No, I thought that was what I was supposed to do. When I was 5 years old, hanging out with my friends who were all older than me, like 8 or 9, I was joking around like, "Yeah, when I'm 20 that's a perfect age to go pro." That's what I had in my head. Then I turn pro at 13. It's all been a mystery and its all been awesome.

What's the rest of 2010 going to be like for you?
Filming for the Plan B video. We have a couple Plan B trips coming up and an Etnies Barbecue Tour, the Dew Tour, Street League and then I turn 21 on Dec. 30. That's going to be a banger, for sure. We're going to Vegas, Miami and Cabo for my birthday week.

Twenty-one-years old. You've been loved, hated and loved again. Any regrets?
No, man. I'm living with every step. I can't live with regret. The past is the past. I'm not worried about it. I can't change it. I can't fix it. It is what it is. I'm just living.

Woodward Beijing Grand Opening

The grand opening of the new Wooward in Beijing, China was last weekend. Among many festivities was the opening of the new Street Plaza, which was designed and built by CA Skateparks. Strongsville will host Journeys Backyard Barbeque tour on Saturday

Extreme skateboard Ryan Sheckler will perform on Saturday at the Journeys Backyard Barbeque Tour at the Westfield-SouthPark Shopping Center

STRONGSVILLE -- An alternative music and sports festival is expected to draw 20,000 participants to the Westfield-SouthPark Shopping Center later this month.

Officials from the Journeys Backyard Barbeque Tour announced last week that Strongsville will be one of five stops for the alternative sports and music festival.

The festival will take place from noon-7 p.m. May 22 in the Westfield’s parking lot. The festival will also make stops in Sacramento, Calif., Dallas, Boston and Nashville.

The tour will feature exhibitions by renowned skateboarder Ryan Sheckler and performances from national and local bands.

Westfield officials expect the tour to be a regional draw, Marketing Director Andy Selesnik said.

“We’re already seeing a lot of interest in this event,” Selesnik said. “I’m an east-sider and I’m already hearing from friends and family that they are anticipating coming out for the event. We’re hoping to draw from not just from the surrounding area, but from the entire region.”

Strongsville was chosen for the site because Westfield has a large enough parking lot to accommodate the event and because Westfield has three Journeys shoe stores, which is the main sponsor for the event, Selesnik said.

One of the most anticipated parts of the tour is the demonstrations by extreme athletes, including skateboarder Ryan Sheckler, who stars in his own MTV show, “Life of Ryan.”

“My nieces are already talking about meeting Ryan,” Selesnik said. “He really makes the girls swoon.”

Sheckler will perform in a 60,000 square foot alternative sports playground filled with ramps and jumps. There will also be performances by freestyle motorcross (motorcycles) and BMX (bicycles) athletes.

There will also be free performances by national bands, including headliners “The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus.”

There will also be an “American Idol” style battle of the bands. Local alternative artists will perform and the winners will be chosen by votes from participants.

The tour will also feature an interactive fun zone with 15 booths of free games prizes and giveaways. There will also be a special area where children can learn to skateboard.

Woodward Beijing hosted skaters and industry legends Saturday, May 15, for the new facility’s grand opening celebrations, which included skate demos from some of the most recognized athletes, fireworks and the Alli Best Trick contest, which was won by Ryan Sheckler.

“Beijing, China (May 17, 2010)-Woodward Beijing hosted skateboarders and bmx riders from all over the world this past weekend to celebrate its grand opening with a giant party that included skateboarding and BMX demos, the Alli Best Trick, fireworks and more. The VIP-invited guest list grew daily as new arrivals joined the festivities, including Tony Hawk, Sandro Dias, Ryan Sheckler, Neal Hendrix, Pierre-Luc Gagnon, Zach Miller, Dan Murphy, Ryan Decenzo, Juergen Horwarth, Curren Caples, Tom Asta, Renton Millar, David Loy, Jaws, Jimmy Carlin, Josh Harrington, Trey Jones, Ty Morrow, Anthony Napolitan, Josh Betley and Dakota Roche.

The crew spent three days touring Chinese landmarks such as the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and the Great Wall of China, finding spots to skate everywhere in a city that is legendary for concrete plazas and flat terrain. And each night, the skate and BMX

ACC Golf: Maddux, Smoltz will play in Tahoe golf tournament

Former Atlanta Braves pitchers Greg Maddux and John Smoltz will compete in the American Century Championships celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, July 13-18, but it is not yet known if troubled Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will be there.

Roethlisberger has played in the tournament every year since 2004, but in the last year has twice been accused of sexual assault. One of the alleged victims said the assault took place at a Tahoe hotel-casino during the 2008 ACC.

The NFL has suspended Roethlisberger for the first six games of the 2010 season for violating the league's personal conduct policy.

Jenn Boyd, a spokesperson for the tournament, wrote in an e-mail that she could not comment on whether tournament owner NBC has invited Roethlisberger this year, and said it is policy to only report players have confirmed their attendance. As of Tuesday, Roethlisberger was not on the commitment list.

Maddux, a Las Vegas native and a shoo-in Hall of Famer when he becomes eligible in 2014, will be making his first appearance.

Smoltz, who spent the majority of his career with Maddux on the Braves' staff, played in 2000 while he was recovering from an injury. The Braves gave him permission to play in the tournament. Smoltz tried to qualify for the U.S. Open but did not advance past the first round of qualifying.

Ryan Sheckler used to have cameras following his every move for his MTV reality show Life Of Ryan, but now the crew has gone home and he can concentrate on one thing -- skateboarding. J-14 caught up with Ryan in New York City, where we chatted with him about the upcoming Dew Tour, beating NBA star Lebron James at the Kids' Choice Awards, and his fave place in the world to be.

J-14: Can you tell us about this year's Dew Tour?
Ryan Sheckler: It's going to be exciting. Last year I only got to skate one of the contests, and then I blew up my foot so I was out the rest of the season. God-willing, I'm 100 percent now, and I'll be able to make it through this season. I'm not worried about winning. I know my skills are there, and I feel comfortable on my skateboard, so I'm just going to go have fun and see what happens.

J-14: How do you keep motivated after all these years of skating?
Ryan: When I was 13, before I'd go skate in a contest, I would get the nerves so bad that I almost couldn't skate. Now I still get nerves, but I know how to control them. As I get older, it's easier to skate these high contests and really put myself out there and know that my skills match up to these guys. It's been a gradual period of getting to know my body and how I feel. I know I have what it takes to win a contest -- it's just putting all the tools together in the exact way every single time. It's fun. I like competing against the guys I skate against and when they win, I'm happy for them. There's no hate in skateboarding, at least on my side. I love watching my competitors and skating with them. I like being around that whole atmosphere.

J-14: How did it feel to beat Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, and Shaun White at the Kids' Choice Awards?
Ryan: I still don't understand how that happened, and the only way that's explainable is my fans. I have the best fans in the world. I love my fans to death, and they share the same love. I'm friends with Kobe, I know Lebron, and to be friends with Shaun White and to beat those guys? Shaun White -- Gold Medal. Kobe -- Championship. Lebron -- King James. It felt weird, like I shouldn't have gotten it -- I didn't know how to react. I talked to Kobe after. He said congrats, but other than that, it's just pretty mellow.

J-14: What's it like to not have reality cameras following you these days?
Ryan: It's kind of awesome. It's just normal. I'm living my life now. I was living my life before -- nothing was fake, nothing was a joke. It was all real. It's just better now that kids don't see me on TV as much -- they don't have as much to say. That's where most of the hate was coming from. Now I've been off TV for a bit, and it feels like all the hate is kind of mellowing out a bit.

J-14: Your big touring season is coming up -- what's the coolest place you've visited?
Ryan: I've been to Australia 20 times. I'll go there whenever -- it's my favorite place in the world. I [also] love San Clemente, where I live, and New York.

Ryan Sheckler will be showcasing his moves on the 2010 Dew Tour and caught up with J-14 mag to tell them all about it.

Say your spouse was convicted of embezzling money from a 19-year-old X-games wunderkind. Would you try to lay low? Or would you to try to sue the city where your spouse was convicted in hopes of getting money for iPod speakers and a car?

Janelle Mercuro is choosing option B.

The Orange County Register is reporting that the wife of Matthew Mercuro, the San Clemente man convicted of embezzling from pro-skater Ryan Sheckler, is suing the city of Huntington Beach to pay for a new car, legal fees and an iPod speaker--all of which she lost because of the investigation into her husband. The tab comes out to $15,890.

Writes the Register's Annie Burris and Jon Cassidy:

Janelle Mercuro said her car was towed from private property in San Juan Capistrano to Huntington Beach in November and later sold, stripped, and abandoned. She did not learn that the car had been towed for 11 days.

She is asking for $7,140 for a new car, registration, costs of being without a car, and legal fees.

Mercuro is also asking for $8,400 in legal fees she accrued while trying to get back personal property including a computer taken during the police investigation.

She said she still has not received her iPod docking station speakers and is asking that the department reimburse her $500 or buy her new speakers. She alleges that the speakers were taken with a search warrant and given to Sheckler's father, Randy.

On Jan. 11, Mercuro's husband was convicted of two felony counts of grand theft shortly after being accused of embezzling $365,000. He served 18 days in jail and owes the $150,000 he said he took from companies owned by Sheckler while he served as their CFO. You'd think that after putting his wife through this whole thing, he could at least spring to buy her some iPod accessories.

Shaun White, Ryan Sheckler to Compete in Skateboard Event at TD Garden in June

Two-time snowboarding Olympic gold medalist Shaun White is taking his act to Boston.

Also known as "The Flying Tomato," White will compete at the Dew Tour's Skate Open from June 25-26 at the TD Garden.

White owns several X Games medals in skateboarding and plans to compete in the skate vert event at the Skate Open.

"Winning my second gold medal at the Olympics was unbelievable, and I’m excited to get back to skateboarding," White said in a press release from Alli, the Alliance of Action Sports, which is promoting the event. "After taking a year off, the Dew Tour’s Skate Open is the perfect place for me to kick off my summer of skating."

Other skateboarders competing in the event include Bob Burnquist, Bucky Lasek, Ryan Sheckler, Paul Rodriguez, and Andy Macdonald, who grew up in Boston.

Tickets for the event went on sale Monday.

Embezzler's wife wants $15,890 from city

HUNTINGTON BEACH – The wife of a San Clemente man arrested on embezzlement charges is asking the city of Huntington Beach to pay for a new car, legal fees, and iPod speakers she said were wrongfully taken during the investigation of her husband.

Mercuro's husband, Matthew Mercuro, was accused of embezzling $365,000 from Ryan Sheckler – a professional skater, X Games champion and MTV reality show star. On Jan. 11 – less than two months after his arrest – Mercuro took a plea deal and was convicted of two felony counts of grand theft. He spent 18 days in jail and is required to pay $150,000 he admitted taking.

Janelle Mercuro, 36, filed three claims against the city April 27 asking for about $15,890 total. The lost property and legal fees resulted from the investigation of her husband involving Huntington Beach police Officer Mark Garcia, the claims said. Mercuro was chief financial officer for several companies owned by Sheckler.

Lt. Russell Reinhart said the police are looking into Janelle Mercuro's claims.

"The claims are considerably different than what she has told us over the past few weeks so we will need to speak with her further to clarify," he wrote in an e-mail to the Register.

Garcia declined to comment on the claims.

With his MTV show "Life of Ryan" long behind him, Ryan Sheckler, has been all skateboarding lately. But there is one thing that can distract him: the Los Angeles Lakers.

"Lakers are my boys!" he said. "I'm 100 percent the biggest Kobe fan on the planet. I text him after every game to tell him what's up."

Sheckler, in case you missed the MTV show that chronicled his life, is a 20-year-old pro skateboarding phenom. At 13, he burst onto the scene and won three consecutive titles at the Dew Tour.

And while he's parlayed that success into charity ventures, a clothing line and endorsements, he's not above being gaga over his favorite hoops team.

The feeling, it seems, is mutual, according to Sheckler.

"He always texts me back," he said. "Sometimes even when he's in the locker room still. He's a good guy."

When they're not talking hoops, Sheckler said he and Bryant chat business. "He's a great business mogul, I'm trying to a business mogul myself," Sheckler said, "and he's definitely just a good dude."

When he's not cheering on his hometown squad, Sheckler said he's enjoying life off the reality show and just psyched for the upcoming Dew Tour, which starts up next month in Boston.

His favorite stop?

Las Vegas, of course.

"I'm going to skate my [expletive] off," he promised. "It's a good atmosphere. Vegas is always fun."

Maloof Money Cup New York Releases 48-Skater Roster

One of the most prestigious contests in skateboarding won't just be heading to New York City
this summer, it will be bringing along 48 of the top pro riders as well.
On Tuesday, the Maloof Money Cup ("MMC") announced its full roster of 48 skaters that will skate in the 2010 MMC NY, and the list is an impressive one, indeed. Among the riders competing in this year's contest include no fewer than seven Thrasher Skaters of the Year (Chris Cole, Marc Johnson, Mark Appleyard, Geoff Rowley, Brian Anderson, Eric Koston and Mike Carroll), 2010 Tampa Pro Winner and Nike commercial star Paul Rodriguez, and love-him-or-hate-him ex-MTV heartthrob Ryan Sheckler.

Outside of the big names that will be competing in MMC NY, this year's roster also boasts a handful of soulful skaters who don't normally compete in contests.

"Besides the big names like P-Rod and Chris Cole, we've got some highly respected skaters like Mike Carroll, Dustin Dollin and Marc Johnson who don't usually skate contests and some amazing guys who are competing at MMC for the first time like Justin Brock and Anthony Van Engelen," said MMC creator Joe Maloof.

The contest will be held on June 5-6 in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens, and will be broadcast live on Fuel TV.

IRVINE, Calif.—Top professional street skateboarders Chris Cole, Paul Rodriguez and Ryan Sheckler will be in the field of 48 at the inaugural Maloof Money Cup New York June 5-6 in Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

Cole won the street competition and $100,000 at last summer's Maloof Money Cup. Rodriguez won the street competition at the inaugural Maloof Money Cup two years ago, also earning $100,000.

First place at the Maloof Money Cup New York will be worth $100,000 from a purse of $250,000.

The Maloof Money Cup New York is an offshoot of the Maloof Money Cup, which will be held for the third straight year in Costa Mesa, Calif., in August. The Maloof Money Cup features street and vert competition, while the New York version will be street only.

The Maloof Money Cup, presented by Vans, is hosted by Joe and Gavin Maloof, the brothers who own the NBA's Sacramento Kings.

The 16,000-square-foot Maloof Cup Park, valued at more than $1 million, was inspired by street spots in each of New York's five boroughs. It will be donated to the city through the NYC Parks & Recreation Department's Adopt-a-Park program.

FUEL TV will broadcast two hours of live coverage each day during the Maloof Money Cup New York and the Maloof Money Cup, scheduled for Aug. 4-8.

6-figure embezzler gets 18 days in jail

A man accused of embezzling $365,000 from Ryan Sheckler – a top professional skater, X Games champion and the star of an MTV reality show – spent 18 days in jail for his crime and is required to repay less than half of that amount.

The arrest of Matthew Mercuro on embezzlement charges in November was reported by many newspapers and Internet news sites after the Orange County District Attorney's office issued a press release, but the case came to a quiet end after accusations of misconduct were leveled against the investigating detective.

Officer Mark Garcia of the Huntington Beach Police Department investigated the crime, even though the involved parties are from San Clemente. Garcia was recently transferred from the detective bureau to patrol after his department's Professional Standards Bureau opened an investigation into his relationship with the Sheckler family.

The investigation centers on whether Garcia worked as a bodyguard for Sheckler, either for money or out of friendship with Sheckler's father, Randy.

Garcia did not have department authorization to work for the Shecklers, said Huntington Beach Lt. Russ Reinhart. Reinhart declined further comment.

Outside his jurisdiction

Garcia also had no reason to be working a case outside his jurisdiction, said Mercuro's defense attorney, Eric N. Hansen.

On Jan. 11 – less than two months after his arrest – Mercuro took a plea deal and was convicted of two felony counts of grand theft. He was sentenced to the 18 days in jail he had served, given three years of formal probation and ordered to repay $150,000 he had admitted taking. Once he repays the first $100,000, the felonies will become misdemeanors and his probation becomes informal, according to court records.

Mercuro was chief financial officer for several companies owned by Sheckler.

Mercuro was initially accused of taking around $365,000. In court documents, Garcia wrote that he had found $351,899.80 in transfers from Sheckler's accounts to Mercuro's personal account, to a joint account in the name of his wife Janelle Mercuro and her friend Sharm Loehmann, and to an account in the name of Inland Properties. There was also around $23,200 in cash withdrawals, according to a search warrant.

The transactions were made on 34 separate dates specified in a search warrant.

Garcia started his investigation after Sheckler and his mother Gretchen told him Mercuro had been making transfers without their knowledge or permission, according to a search warrant. Initially, Gretchen Sheckler told Garcia that Mercuro had taken around $270,000.

Deputy District Attorney Brian G. Mulherin, who prosecuted the case, said that the plea deal for $150,000 was reached because there were some "uncertainties" about how much money was stolen.

He downplayed the effect that Garcia's apparent conflict-of-interest had in weakening the case, saying that it was difficult to establish an exact amount that had been taken.

"When you're dealing with a business that has significant out-of-pocket expenses, you're not necessarily going to be able to come to an exact dollar figure," Mulherin said.

Amount reduced

So how did $351,899.80 become $150,000?

According to court records and Mulherin, Mercuro admitted (as part of his deal) to taking $65,495.22 from an account known as Sheckler Merch 2 and making $75,000 in transfers to Inland Properties.

That left $211,404 in transfers unaccounted for. That amount was reduced to $10,504.48, making for a total of an even $150,000.

The prosecution couldn't prove all of the transfers were theft, Mulherin said, so "we reached a compromise number as to the difference."

Mercuro, however, had already admitted to taking "about $270,000," according to a search warrant. But the person who would have to testify to that admission was Garcia.

If Garcia took the stand, the defense could cross-examine him about his relationship with the Shecklers

How much did Garcia undermine the case?

"I'm not going to put a percentage on it," Mulherin said. "The strength of an embezzlement case is the bank statements."

District attorney spokeswoman Farrah Emami argued that Mercuro's sentence was not unusually light, pointing to Clifford Polston, the former head of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tustin. In November, Polston was given a sentence of probation, community service� and $140,000 in restitution after taking nearly $200,000 from the clubs.

Mulherin pointed to a case resolved last week where an employee who stole at least $13,000 was given probation.

Some harsher punishments

In other recent cases, embezzlers were given harsher punishments.

This month, Bridget Dominique Ganier was sentenced to three years in prison and ordered to return $306,000 she had taken from a cafeteria at Orange Coast Medical Center.

In June, Yorba Linda pastors Philip and Richard Cunningham were sentenced to two years in prison, even after returning $3 million in property to their church.

In November, Tracy Lynn Salcido, former CFO of Orangewood Children's Foundation, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for embezzling $780,000.

Garcia and Sheckler did not return calls for comment.

Janelle Mercuro and Sharm Loehmann have not been charged with a crime.

Hansen, Mercuro's attorney, issued a statement: "Mr. Mercuro is moving forward with his life and has full confidence in the HBPD's Professional Standards Unit and Chief (Kenneth) Small to conduct a thorough and fair investigation into the serious allegations of misconduct by HBPD Det. Mark Garcia."

· A 40,000 square foot indoor facility featuring two different street courses with rails, banks, hubbas, and pyramids; a multi-level mini ramp; a wooden bowl with a spine and deep end; foam and resi pits; and a giant vert ramp with resi and foam pits attached.

Skateboarder and active philanthropist Oakley’s Ryan Sheckler wins the Favorite Male Athlete Award at the 2010 Kids’ Choice Awards. The Kids’ Choice awards honors the year’s biggest television, movie, and musical acts voted by Nickelodeon television viewers. The award was presented live on Saturday March, 27th on FOX by Chris Rock, David Spade and Lilly Collins.
